Hatch Blue
Driving Impact from Day One
Hatch Blue was founded on the vision of producing sustainable seafood with minimal negative impact to benefit oceans, ecosystems, and future generations.
Our Approach to a Sustainable Seafood Future
We believe aquaculture is essential to meet global protein demand in a sustainable way. The intricate and challenging nature of this endeavor requires deep expertise. This is why we adopted a knowledge-driven, specialist approach.
Our Theory of Change
Aquaculture as a Solution
We firmly believe that aquaculture, done responsibly, is a key solution to feeding the planet with minimal negative impact. On average, seafood has a has a smaller carbon footprint than other animal proteins. This is a promising start, but we have a long way to go to produce 100% sustainable fish.
Advancing Sustainable Aquaculture
We're committed to substantially improving aquaculture from feed to fork. This implies working with existing industry to improve current practices, and developing entirely new solutions with innovators.
Our Approach
Dual-approach
We believe a multi-faceted approach to implement sustainable practices with existing industry stakeholders and to simultaneously explore new frontiers to better capture opportunities ahead.
Long-term oriented
We are in it for the long-run. By consistently playing to our strengths, we hope to compound impact with time and contribute to a more resilient and equitable seafood system.
Incremental and systemic change
We place equal emphasis on every-day improvements and systematic changes
Be honest and realistic
We know that not everything can be classified as impactful and much of our impact work may never yield visible results.
Together, across the Hatch Blue teams, we tackle impact from multiple perspectives and aim to improve:
Transparency
Innovation
Connecting people
Gender equality
We aim to create positive impact across environmental and social outcomes
Climate
Reduce CO2 footprint
Our consulting team provide advice to investors and farmers on carbon footprint reduction opportunities across land-based salmon farming and insect farming.
Climate change adaptation
Pacific Hybreed improves shellfish seed yield and resilience through cross-breeding
Our Blue Carbon Innovation Studio in 2024, led by our programs team supports companies that restore mangrove forests. Mangroves can serve as buffers to climate impacts including extreme weather events, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss or food insecurity.
Biodiversity & Ecosystems
Restoring ocean and coastal ecosystems
OoNee Sea Ranch reduces sea urchin populations in overgrazed areas to restore kelp forests.
Our consulting team works with government and development finance institutions to strengthen the seaweed economy e.g. Alaska Seaweed Insights
Remove excessive nitrogen & phosphorus
OceanFarmr offers a full-suite solution to improve oyster farmer productivity which converts excess nitrogen into shells and tissues.
Our consulting team works with salmon farmers to improve FCR, reduce mortality on farm and convert waste into fertilizer to reduce nitrogen excretion from fish and better utilize nitrogen in waste.
Reduce the use of harmful substances
Peptobiotics produces antimicrobial peptides to replace antibiotic in shrimp farming.
Our consulting team identifies innovation for specific pharmaceutical companies to further reduce the industry's reliance on antibiotics.
Social
Strengthen local communities
Coast4C aggregates and partners with thousands of farmers to build a supply of quality, responsibly sourced seaweed in quantity.
Our programs team builds blue economy communities in Ireland, Latin America and Africa through programs like Blue Venture Builder and Women in Ocean Foods
Animal welfare

New Frontiers of Impact Investing
In 2020, Hatch Blue together with the Nature Conservancy developed a first-of-its-kind impact fund dedicated to the blue economy. The Blue Revolution Fund (BRF)’s impact framework includes three unique features:
Fund-Level Impact Targets
From the outset, BRF defined and quantified six impact targets at the fund level before identifying specific investment opportunities.
Independent Monitoring and Reporting
The Nature Conservancy, an independent, science-based organization, monitors and verifies BRF’s impact data, offering investors a strong assurance of integrity and reliability.
Aligned Incentive Structure
50% of the fund’s carried interest is contingent on achieving the fund-level impact targets.
BRF is committed to transparency and open dialogue. We make our impact report publicly available and encourage feedback to refine and enhance our impact framework and practices.
